Benwood

The Benwood, a 360-foot merchant marine freighter built in England in 1910, met its fate on April 9, 1942, amid rumors of German U-boats in the area. The Coast Guard advised ships to navigate without lights in darkened waters, leading to a collision with the Robert C. Tuttle. Despite efforts to steer towards land, the Benwood's bow was severely damaged, prompting its abandonment and eventual sinking. Salvage operations followed, but the ship was eventually dynamited and used for aerial target practice by the U.S. Army. Today, it remains a great dive site in Key Largo, boasting turtles and a Spanish anchor near the bow, making it an ideal spot for thrilling night dives.
