The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Duane rests upright on a sandy bottom in 120 feet of water, one mile south of Molasses Reef off Key Largo. Decommissioned on August 1, 1985, as the oldest active U.S. military vessel, the Duane was donated to the Keys Association of Dive Operators for use as an artificial reef. On November 27, 1987, she was intentionally sunk near Molasses Reef, with her hatches opened and holds pumped full of water.
Measuring 327 feet in length, the Duane offers divers an immersive experience, with the wreck sitting in 125 feet of water and a top depth of 60 feet at the Crow’s Nest. While exploring the main deck at a depth of around 105 feet, divers encounter an abundance of marine life and vibrant coral growth. Due to its proximity to the Gulf Stream, currents can affect dive conditions, but when conditions permit.
