Situated 5 miles off the coast of Islamorada, FL, the Eagle cargo freighter serves as a captivating diving destination since its intentional sinking in 1985 to become an artificial reef. Originally christened Ralia Dan in 1962, this vessel underwent multiple name changes and encountered various fire incidents during its seafaring tenure. Acquired by the Florida Keys Artificial Reef Association, with support from diver donations and Eagle Tire Co. owner Joe Teitelbaum, the Eagle found its final resting place near the Alexander Barge. Despite Hurricane Georges splitting the wreck into two pieces after resting on its starboard side for 13 years, the Eagle remains a prominent feature on the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Shipwreck Trail, offering divers opportunities for wreck exploration, spearfishing, and advanced training amidst its captivating marine ecosystem and historical intrigue.
