Thunderbolt

Originally named Randolph the 188 ft freighter was part of a fleet built during World War II for coastal minefield operations. Transferred to the Navy in 1949, it remained in reserve until acquired by Caribbean Enterprises of Miami in 1961. Later, Florida Power and Light used it for lightning strike research, leading to its renaming as Thunderbolt. Eventually donated to the Florida Keys Artificial Reef Association, the ship was sunk off Key Largo in 1986 as an artificial reef. Now resting upright in 115 feet of water, it's a popular dive site, offering exploration of its decks and abundant marine life.
